Gilbert Bozwell Harvey was born in Ripley, Virginia (present day West Virginia) in 1825. He had one sister, named Sarah Ann Harvey who married Robert Cleek. Gilbert expressed often to family members that he was "Scottish" and also that he (and his sisters) were orphans raised by Hugh Kiser. Extensive research has been done to find "Hugh Kiser" in that area, but to no success.
Gilbert is often linked with Joseph Harvey and Rebecca Wilson. Gilbert and Joseph were both involved in a court case in Ripley Virginia, yet they are not related. Joseph and Rebecca had five known children, one being Marmion (Doctor) Harvey who wrote a biography of his family. Sarah and Gilbert are not listed and all census reports prove that indeed they are not related. Furthermore genealogical research proves that Joseph is the son of Annie Craig of Virginia who was Irish. It is believed that Joseph is 100% Irish.
Gilbert went to war in the Mexican War, his entire experience has been documented and shared by our cousin Donald Harvey. Gilbert stated that he would not participate in the Civil War, henceforth moving his family to Ray County Missouri, on the edge of civilization about 1850. He would take his two older sons to Colorado to mine for silver and gold, leaving his wife and the remaining children in Ray County, Missouri. Gilbert was successful with mining and the family eventually moved to Colorado in Canon City.
Most of the family stayed in the area of Canon City and became involved with cattle farming, while some continued to mine.
Gilbert and Mary Madelyn Vandine Harvey are my ggg-grandparents, descending to Gorey and Mary Rebecca Young Harvey, Nelson Arthur (changed to Truman Arthur) and Vera Victoria Moyer Harvey, Truman Philip and Ruth Fletcher Harvey and finally my parents (living) and myself.
