Now Raymond we'll tell your story
Where did you get the name Percival? Did your father like King Arthur's knight Sir Percival who went on the quest for the Holy Grail? Did you know that in 2020 your name was ranked #6,180 in popularity as a baby name at babycenter.com? Don't worry about that Dot.Com business. It's before your time and MINE, but we must give credit where credit is due.Only teasing you!
On his birth certificate his first name is Percy Schuyler. In the 1870 Census he is listed as Raymond age 7. On On the birth certificate of his son he lists his name as Raymond P Schuyler. Many family members called him Ray. On the monument that he shares with his wife and his brother-in-law he is P. R. Schuyler but he has a separate marker in Cedar Lawn with just RAYMOND. He must have regretted his name.
Percival's birthplace is listed on the birth certificate as Schuyler Basin, Wayne Twp, Passaic Co, NJ.
P Raymond was a second son born to Philip Isaac and Mary Elizabeth Bartholf Schuyler. He had blue eyes and brown hair. It was said by his 3 children that he was happy, cheerful, and enjoyed learning.
Eventually, he and his family moved from Pompton to Paterson, New Jersey.
He married Grace Coulter Close Gould Jan. 10, 1833 at her parents home on Main Street in Paterson.
His son Stephen Gould Schuyler (first born) said he was extremely strict with him as he was growing up, but easy on his two sisters, Helen and Anna.
Percival was an inventor and his life's ambition was to develop a perpetual motion machine in his lab in the basement of his home. Of course he never succeeded, but he did invent the train coupling device BUT by the time he submitted the patent someone had gotten ahead of him.
From Grace's grandfather--James Close and her brother James Close Gould --Percival and his son Stephen Schuyler inherited the Gould- Schuyler Coal Yard".
Percival sadly died of a heart attack.
