Abraham Spotts was born February 17, 1821 in Berks County, Pennsylvannia; the son of Daniel and Barbara Maria (Hehn) Spotts.

Abraham married Mary Stouffer and settled in Cumberland County, Pennsylvannia area. To them eleven children were born: Susan Laura, the widow of Daniel Reeder, of New York City; Katie A., the widow of James Line, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Jacob E., and Rettie, the wife of James Warnock. He was preceded in death by Elizabeth, John F., William, Sadie, Mary, Alice and Daniel T.

Abraham appears to have been a prosperous farmer in Cumberland County. In 1863, just prior to the battle of Gettysburg, the 12th Alabama Regiment moved through his farm. Captain Robert E Clark wrote in his diary, "June 27. Marched through several small towns, and two miles beyond Carlisle, on the Baltimore turnpike, at least 25 miles. Ate an excellent supper at Mr. A. Spott's."

In 1880, Abraham brought his family to Iowa, settling near Battle Creek. He gradually added to his holdings until he owned a large and valuable farm.

Abraham died April 30, 1893 in Battle Creek. His obituary reads, "Mr. Abram Spotts, who recently bought and moved into the old McKown estate, to make it the home of his old age, made a short stay. He has been feeble ever since he moved and recently was quite ill, till last Sunday p.m. when he went out into the great beyond, leaving his aged wife with whom he had lived and shared the joys of life for a little over 51 years, to finish the course alone. In that time they have raised a large and prosperous family. Mr. Spotts lived to a good old age, and life seemed to close as a candle goes out." (dated May 4, 1893) He is buried alongside his wife in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek.

BIOGRAPHY: Abraham appears to have been a prosperous farmer in Cumberland County, PA. In 1863, just prior to the battle of Gettysburg, the 12th Alabama Regiment seems to have moved through his farm as evidenced by this diary entry by Captain Robert E Clark, Company E, 12th Alabama Infantry: "June 27. Marched through several small towns, and two miles beyond Carlisle, on the Baltimore turnpike, at least 25 miles.

Moved his family from Pennsylvania to Ida County, Iowa in what looks to be 1880 (based on analysis of son John's children's births and the census).
