On October 1, 1861, David Hoff enlisted in the US Army as a private. He joined Company C, Iowa 15th Infantry Regiment, on December 31, 1861. He was promoted to full sergeant on July 30, 1862. He was promoted to full second lieutenant on March 20, 1863. He was mustered out of the Army on June 9, 1864. He was wounded in the war, but survived.
