David Hoff was the son of Samuel Hoff (1806-1855) and Eliza Hoffman Hoff (1811-1855).

David married Mary "Belle" Black in 1861.

David's Iowa death certificate lists his DOD as May 4, 1901. The certificate also says he was 63 years, 10 months, and 17 days old, making his DOB June 18, 1837.

The US Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter, a key fort held by US troops in South Carolina.

On October 1, 1861, David Hoff enlisted in the US Army as a private. He joined Company C, Iowa 15th Infantry Regiment, on December 31, 1861. He was promoted to full sergeant on July 30, 1862. He was promoted to full second lieutenant on March 20, 1863. He was mustered out of the Army on June 9, 1864. He was wounded in the war, but survived.
