Charles was born as Garabed Agemian in Aleppo, Syria. His parents were Alexandre and Mary Agemian. The Agemian family immigrated to the U.S. in 1910. After graduating from Fort Lee High School, Charles got a messenger's job with the Bank of the Manhattan Company and began taking classes at the American Institute of Banking. He earned a B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. Charles married Mary Louise Plumb circa 1938. In 1944, Charles, aged 35, was appointed the Assistant Treasurer at the Bank of Manhattan Company. By 1952, Charles was the Vice President and Comptroller of the bank. In 1955, the Bank of Manhattan Company merged with Chase Manhattan Bank, and Charles was appointed V.P. and Deputy Comptroller. A year later, he was V.P. and Comptroller, and in 1959, he was named Comptroller General. In 1963, he would be promoted to Executive V.P. and placed in charge of the newly-created bank operations department. Circa 1969, Charles, aged 60, left Chase to become chairman and CEO of the newly-established Hackensack Trust Co. Shortly after taking over, he changed the bank's name to Garden State National Bank. A year later it merged with North Jersey National Bank of Hudson County. Charles retired from Garden State National in 1980, remaining in banking until 1994, when he stepped down as a director of the Sterling National Bank at age 85. Officially retired, he and wife Mary moved to Spring Lake, New Jersey.
