In 1850, John's parents left their Ohio farm and moved to a new farm home near Fairfield in Jefferson County, Iowa, traveling by covered wagon.
Ten years after going to Iowa, John married Margaret Ann Elliott in Birmingham, Van Buren County, Iowa, on February 8, 1860. During the course of their marriage, John and Margaret became the parents of thirteen children:
Orlando Elliott (1861)
Clara (1862)
Avalo (1864)
Nettie (1866)
Estelle (1868)
Un-named Boy (1870)
Bessie (1871)
Cleora (1873)
Simon (1876)
John True (1879)
Infant Daughter (1880)
Dwight (1881)
Pearl (1883)
Unfortunately, six of these children died as infants or while quite young.
During the time of the Civil War, John served with Company C, 8th Regiment, Iowa Cavalry, being mustered into service at Birmingham, Iowa on July 29, 1863, Serial Number 370576. He was discharged August 13, 1865, at Macon, Georgia, suffering from rheumatism and eye disease.
In 1875, John and Margaret moved their family to Wellsville in Montgomery County, Missouri, where their children grew into adulthood. Then in 1906, John and Margaret again moved west, this time to Sheridan Lake, Kiowa County, Colorado. They established a homestead on government land to which they later aquired title.
Records of 1912 showed the couple to be living in Brandon, Colorado. Sometime between 1912 and 1915, they moved to Everett, Snohomish County, Washington, where their eldest son Orlando was living. Margaret became ill and died in 1915.
John Ignatius Fulton died March 13, 1918 in Everett, Washington and was buried beside his wife in Hartline Cemetery. His death certificate listed cerebral hemorhage and senility as causes of death.
Note by contributor Lyle Fulton: I am related to John Fulton in that he was a brother to my paternal great grandfather, James Immel Fulton.
