Leaders of State and Nation Mourn With Governor
Funeral Services for Robert White Tuesday at M'Coy Home in Marietta
Marietta, O., Nov. 13-The sympathy of a great state and leaders of the nation went out to Gov. George White of Ohio tonight as he awaited here the arrival of the body of his youngest son, Robert, 21.
Hundreds of telegrams of condolence poured into the executive mansion at Columbus as the governor, his daughter, Miss May Louise White, the state's first lady, and his son, George White, Jr., left the capital to drive over Ohio's winding and snow-swept roads to their former home. Tomorrow they will bury in Oak Grove cemetery here, beside the grave f the governor's wife, the youth who was killed so suddenly Saturday night in an automobile accident.
Mrs. White died in a hospital at Atlantic City in September, 1929 and Miss Mary had been head of the executive mansion at Columbus since her father assumed office in 1931.
Men high in the ranks of the Democratic party joined with scores of others in extending sympathies. Messages were sent to Columbus, where flags were at half staff by Al. Smith, the 1928 candidate for president, former Gov. James M. Cox, the 1920 candidate, and John W. Davis, the 1924 candidate. Condolences also were received from ??? Shouse, former Democratic national chair-man, Archbishop McNicholas of Cincinnati and President Dodge of Princeton university, where Robert was a senior student, among others.
The body, accompanied by the governor's eldest son, David White, a professor at New York City college: Robert McKelvy of New York, a brother-in-law of Governor White, Miss Carolyn Elizabeth Lawrence, and her father, Frederick Lawrence, will arrive here at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow. Miss Lawrence will be married Friday night to George White, Jr., at a ceremony attended only by the immediate families. Plans for a larger wedding and reception were cancelled because of the death of Robert.
Funeral services for the youth will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John H. McCoy, life-long friends of the White family. John McCoy, Jr., will be one of the eight pallbearers.
The services, which will be public, will be in charge of the Rev. Edwin B. Townsend, pastor of the First Presbyterian church here. Private services will be held later at the cemetery.
Besides McCoy, Jr., the pallbearers will be Karl Larsen, captain of the Princeton baseball team; Alexander Keer, Robert's roommate at Princeton; and Marietta youths, William Mildren, William Wiant, Floyd Bueles, Donald Bader and Kenneth Haines.
