Daughter of James Lupo and Charity Lancaster. Growing up, she was exposed to Sacred Harp singing in the local community where she lived and learned how to sing. She was educated at Hamilton Female Institute where she studied piano had a keen interest in music. She often enclosed pieces of music that she had included in letters written to family members and friends. On 18 November 1866 she married Washington Hagler and together they had five children. In December 1876, they moved to Butler, Freestone County Texas, eventually settling in Oakwood, Leon County Texas. She continued to send her own music to her family, especially her sister, Ann, who was also a singer of the Sacred Harp. She was reported by Joseph S. James (a noted Sacred Harp singing teacher and publisher) to be a "sweet singer" and "a Christian woman of a lovable disposition." She is credited with writing the music to "The Last Words of Copernicus", "I'm on My Journey Home", and Sardis", that were published in the 1870 version of "The Sacred Harp."
