John P. Best who states he had lived in GA since 1859, has a pension app on line in the GA Archives under Clay County. He says he enlisted in Blakely ( Early Co.), GA on May 7, 1862. He was a private in Co. A, 51st GA regiment. He served with his unit until Sailers (sic) Creek, Va when his unit was retreating from Richmond. He got a ticket from his commanding officer to ride on the ambulance wagon for 2 hours! Then he was cut off by the enemy. Proof of his death on 3 Oct 1924 is included in the paper, and his wife, Martha J. Best , applied for his pension.
J. P. Best is also listed in the "Early County News", printed in Blakely, GA, Oct 24, 1912 Image 3, which is a reprint of the Co. A, 51st GA roster printed in that paper on Oct 26, 1893. He is listed as a private of the unit. See gahistoricnewspaper.galileo.usg.edu under Blakely to find the roster.
