Peter Phineas was the fourth child of Philip and Sarah Powelson Clarkson. He was just 18 months old when his mother died and not quite 8 years when his father died. Two months after his twentieth birthday, his step-mother, Jane Seabring, also died.
   Peter was born in Ovid, Seneca County, New York. When he was 28 he was married to Mary C. Robinson on March 12, 1851 by the Rev. Fr. Willis in the Town of Varick, Seneca County, New York. She was the daughter of John and Keziah Robinson and was reportedly part Seneca Indian. Peter and Mary lived at Seneca Falls, N. Y. where Peter worked as a boatman (probably on the Erie and Seneca Canals) and as a farmer.
   Peter joined the New York Infantry Volunteers, 50th Regiment, Company K as a Private on November 26, 1861 at Seneca Falls. Company K was commanded by Captian James H. McDonald. Peter was mustered in at Elmira, New York on December 17. By the end of December his regiment was in Virginia. The Confederacy held Yorktown at this time and Virginia was the scene of much fighting all during 1862. At the end of April....
   During November and December, he was sick in the regimental hospital at Aquis Creek, Virginis...
   After his discharge, Peter went home for the balance of 1865. Then on December 28, 1865 he reenlisted at Junius, New York as a private of Company H, 148th Regiment, New York Volunteers. From January to December....

   Mary Robinson Clarkson died January 17, 1871 at the ag of 44 years, 4 months, and 5 days and is buried in Seneca Falls, New York.
   Peter Phineas Clarkson died on March 5, 1907 at the age of 85 years, 8 months, 17 dayas and is buried in the Lancaster Rural Cemetery, Lancaster, New York."
