James was living in Washtenaw County, Michigan by 1846 when he married Miss Ursula Blair. "Received for Record Oct 27, 1846. This may certify that James Nash of the town of Salem, County of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, aged 23 years and Ursula Blair of the town of Salem, County of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, aged 20 years, were joined together in Holy matrimony on this 20th day of October A.D. 1846 by me at the house of Sam'l Blair. In presence of John Dymond [&] Wm. Ambler. Sam'l Bebeus, Minister."
1850 found James and family living in Detroit, he was working as a sawyer. In 1860 they were living in Royal Oak, in 1870 they were in Plymouth but late that year he built a house and moved to Northville. According to the Northville Record on 26 November 1870: "A new dwelling house is being erected by Mr. James Nash near Ambler's mill [in Northville]." James and family were living in Northville in 1880 and in the 1890's he was a member of the Northville Lodge No 186 of F. & A. M.
His wife, Ursula Ann (Blair) Nash died at Northville in 1887 and was buried at Rural Hill Cemetery. James remained in Northville until October 1903 when he moved to California to live with his daughter Frances in Prospect Park (which became E. Hollywood). Prospect Park was established in 1887 to the east of the then-newly named rancho called Hollywood, located some four miles northwest of Los Angeles.
James was a mechanic at the time of his death in 1907.

James R. Nash, at the residence of his daughter Mrs. F. L. Hastings, 1917 Prospect Avenue. Father of W. E. Nash, Mrs. C. E. Clarkson, Miss Ella Nash, all of East Hollywood and W. H. Nash of Los Angeles. Aged 83 years. Funeral from residence of Mrs. Hastings Saturday March 23 at 2 P.M. Friends invited. Interment, Hollywood Cemetery." [Obit - Los Angeles Times 3/22/07 p.16]
Father of: Frances Lorenda Nash Hastings, Walter Eugene Nash, Ellen Augusta Nash, Eveline Manning Nash Clarkson, and Willis Horatio Nash.
