Asheville Civic Leader Clyde Bradley, 78, Dies
Clyde William Bradley, 78, of 23 Chatham Road, a former chairman of the County Board of Elections and long active in community affairs, died early Friday in a hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Bradley, who served as chairman of the County Board of Elections for 22 years and previously was chariman of the City Board of Elections for five years, was a retired coal dealer.
Mr. Bradley served many years as treasurer of the Buncombe County unit of the American Cancer Society and was one of the unit's most active members.
He directed the annual fundraising drive of the ACS in Buncombe County on several occasions and in 1959 was awarded the Whitlock Lees Memorial Trophy for outstanding work in efforts to aid the prevention and cure of cancer.
He was recently awarded the Silver Sword, denoting 25 years of service to the Cancer society.
Mr. Bradley had served as director of the North Carolina Association of County Election Boards and as president of the Asheville Retail coal Dealers. He also served on state and national boards of coal dealers' organizations.
In his earlier years, Mr. Bradley worked for the Southern Railway and the Asheville Drayage, fuel and Construction Co.
He was a son of the late George W. and Rachel Bradley. His wife, the former Annie Boone Harmon, died in January, 1970.
Mr. Bradley is survived by two sons, Eckel C. Bradley Sr., of Asheville and Col. Clyde W. Bradley (USAF - Ret.) of Montgomery, Ala.; a daughter, Mrs. Richard Krickhan of Asheville; two sisters, Mrs. Rixie Shope of Asheville and Mrs. Millard Graham of Arden; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Another daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hudson, died in 1965.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of J. William Hendon Funeral Service.
The Rev. Cecil Sherman will officiate. Burial will be in Lewis Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Julian A. Woodcock Jr., G. L. Leslie Jr., Mickey Allen, W. F. Krickhan Jr., Joseph L. Brown, John Gregg Jr., Coke Candler and Wayne Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Buncombe County unit of the American Cancer Society, Northwestern Bank Building.
