Bertoni, Richard R.
Age 86, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family December 11, 2009 following a short illness. He was born November 18, 1923 in Ann Arbor, MI the son of Marguerita (Roveno) and Ralph Bertoni. Richard had been a life-long Ann Arbor resident. He was married for 51 years to the love of his life Jennie, who preceded him in death in 1997. Surviving are three daughters, Michelle Bertoni, Jo Bertoni, Denise RJ Bertoni (Tony Pocrnich); a son, Robert BJ Bertoni (Susan); seven grandchildren, Kurt and Eric Holtfreter, Anthony J Pocrnich, Daniel, Colleen, Kelly, and Patrick Bertoni; two sisters, Marguerite (Bill) Oliver, Nancy (John) Hansen, and many dear in-laws, nieces, nephews, and so many special friends. He was preceded in death by four siblings and their spouses, Genevieve (JD) Royce, Andrew (Evelyn) Bertoni, Eugene (Rosemary) Bertoni, and an infant brother Robert Bertoni. He was an active, life-long member of St. Thomas The Apostle Church and school where, as a youth, he excelled in athletics. Throughout his life he supported and loved many parishioners and priests. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1941. For his heroic service on Tarawa, and the island of Saipan, with the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, Second Marine Division, he was a awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V", the Purple Heart, and numerous other medals. Later in life, he was enshrined with the first honorees on the "Wall of Heroes" at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. After WWII, he graduated from Ferris College Institute. He worked at Michigan Consolidated Gas Company for 32 years for the most part in the accounting dept., while also working numerous other part-time jobs to support his family. In his prime, he was one of Ann Arbor's finest golfers. He volunteered at many places, especially the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. Throughout his entire adult life, Richard loved volunteering as "Santa Claus" where he was admired by young and old. Never was there a better "Santa." He even led the Ypsilanti, MI, St. Patrick's Day parade as the lead leprechaun for years. Richard will be forever remembered for his incredible sense of humor, charm, compassion, love of family and Our Lord Jesus Christ. He never knew a stranger, gave generously, and loved so many, so very well. Richard R. Bertoni. "the one, and only" Rest in peace, and Sempre Fi! We will miss you! Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, December 18 at St. Thomas The Apostle Church. Burial will follow at St Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the St Thomas Church, the Ann Arbor VA Hospital Voluntary Services, or the Humane Society of Huron Valley. Family will receive friends at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel (403 S. 4th Ave.) on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 with the Rosary to be prayed 7 p.m. Thursday.
