Many years ago, in 1976, when I was only 25 years old, I began my 12 years at Citizens Bank as a Word Processor. Part of my duties were to be a relief switchboard operator for breaks, lunches, and vacations days. Marvel taught me how to be a switchboard operator, but she taught me so much more. She taught me how to laugh out loud, to find beauty in everything, especially nature, and I could go on and on. Marvel was just like her name, she was marvelous! She was an unforgetable person, and I was saddened to see that she had passed. We had lost touch as the years went by, but at the same time, glad that she had lived a long and full life. Now I am the age she was when she trained me. The circle continues. I hope I am touching some young lives as she did. Thank you, Marvel, for you did touch mine.

Here is her obituary as it appeared in The Sheboygan Press:

Marvel J. Gier, 92, of Sheboygan, died at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice on Monday morning, January 4, 2010.

Marvel was born January 16, 1917 in Sheboygan, to Arnold and Cora (Hoekstra) Kernen.

She attended local elementary schools before graduating from Sheboygan Central High School.

On June 6, 1939 Marvel was united in marriage to William C. Gier, a long time Kohler Co. employee. They formerly resided in the twenty four hundred block of N. 23rd St. The couple enjoyed trips to arts and crafts shows, where they displayed Bill's bird carvings and Marvel's craft items. Mr. Gier preceded her in death on March 28, 1992.

Marvel was employed at the former Citizens Bank as a switchboard operator for over 20 years.

Mrs. Gier was a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ where she served with the ECJ Circle and was actively involved in the craft fair. She was also a member of the Sheboygan Audubon Society.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Joseph) Chopp of Eagle River, Wisconsin and Mary Ahonen of Oshkosh; 3 grandchildren, Claire Jumper, Cyndi (Brent) Haasl and Forrest Ahonen; 3 great-grandchildren, Catherine Meilinger, and Alyx and Dillon Haasl; 2 sisters, Virginia Mueller and Evelyn Maas; and other family members.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Ebenezer United Church of Christ. Rev. Dr. Roger J. Mealiff, Pastor, officiated.

Marvel leaves her family a legacy of appreciating nature, especially birds and flowers. She will always be remembered for her kind heart and assistance to others.
