Son of Oliver E. Hastings and Mary:

Edward served in the 5th Michigan Cavalry, Co. D. during the Civil War:
   Hastings, Edward S., Plymouth. Enlisted in company D, Fifth Cavalry, Aug. 14, 1862, at Northville, for 3 years, age 19. Mustered Aug. 27, 1862. Mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., June 22, 1865.

Generally described as an "iron molder".

"MARRIED In Northville, June 12th, at the residence of the bride's father by the Rev. James Dubuar, Mr. Edward S. Hastings to Miss Frank Nash. Also, at the same time and place. Mr. C. Eugene Clarkson to Miss Eva M. Nash, sister of the above named bride. A short time after the ceremony, which took place in the early part of the evening, the happy couples were greeted with some very fine music from the Northville Cornet Band." ['Northville Record', June 22, 1872]

Lived in Northville, Michigan before moving to California about 1901.

Edward had 5 children:
Kate Winnette Hastings Kingswell Selfridge, Erle Huntingdon Hastings, Walter Verne Hastings, Bernice Eloise Hastings Scott & Ruth Ursula Hastings Hilliard.
