Graduated from Weber College and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1928. He taught at Nephi High School for six years. He received a scholarship to attend Standford University in 1934. When he returned, he taught at Provo High School. In 1936 he accepted a position in the English Department at Brigham Young University.
