Jan was born in Long Beach, CA. to Jan Nicolaas and Cato Roos, shortly after their immigration to the United States from Holland. He attended elementary school in Los Angeles, and junior high at the American International School while living in Brussels with his parents. This early exposure to Europe would later greatly influence his career on an international level.
Jan and his parents moved back to Westwood, CA. in 1969, where he attended University High school in Santa Monica, and established many of his longest lasting friendships. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry at UCLA in 1972, and it was there in the Chemistry Library that he met his future wife and soul mate, Laurie.
Jan received his Masters Degree in Organic Chemistry from UCI, married Laurie, and the two California natives, dressed in shorts and sandals, journeyed to Minnesota in 1979 to work at 3M. It was there, in St. Paul in 1983, that they had their first child, Jennifer Lauren.
In 1985, after enjoying five years in the bitter cold and establishing close lifetime friendships, the family moved back to California where Jan joined a new sales force at Raychem Corporation in Menlo Park. Jan's career in the Aerospace Industry would continue for 23 years and create for him a worldwide network of professional colleagues and close friends. His first assignment allowed him to move the family to Laguna Hills where his son, Jan Michael, was born in 1986.
Family life in Southern California entailed many outdoor adventures at Laguna Beach in the summer, and the snowy Sierra Mountains in the winter. As a young father, Jan was always actively involved in his children's lives as a mentor and coach in school, sports, and their individual interests, even as he balanced his professional career and his pursuit of an Executive Masters in Business Administration at UCLA. He shared with his family a life-long passion of motorsports, and spent many weekends driving them around in his E-Type Jaguar. The family shared their home with many wonderful animals, including a golden retriever ("Cassie"), and a yellow labrador ("Buddy") who joined them when they moved to Los Altos in 1997 as part of Jan's promotion at Raychem.
Their new home, and the land it resided upon, benefitted from their dedication and love as they remodeled, planted, landscaped, and turned it into a warm place for family and friends to gather regularly. At Raychem (thereafter Tyco Electronics), Jan shared his unending sense of humor, welcoming smile, and warm conversation with colleagues around the world; endearing himself to those he worked with, and acquiring their life-long friendship.
At home, he continued his commitment to his children's growth and saw them both attend and graduate high school and college. This same dedication to his family enabled Laurie to pursue her own personal and professional goals, always knowing that she could count on Jan to cook, clean, and manage the household when needed.
After enjoying near perfect health his entire life, Jan was diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2009. As always, he and Laurie quickly developed a plan of attack for this new challenge, and worked tirelessly to overcome the disease.
Throughout the year the Roos family, aided by Jan's perseverance and positive attitude, embarked on many adventures, from the ocean waters of Newport Beach, to the sandy Palm Spring Desert, to the restoration of his beloved Jaguar in his own garage. Jan met the challenge of cancer with strength and honor, and before it ultimately took him from this life, he had come to find peace and completeness with himself, his family, his dearest friends, and his relationship with God. He will forever exist in the hearts and minds of all those who knew him, whether briefly or for many years.
Jan is survived by his wife, Laurie, his daughter, Jennifer, his son, Jan Michael, his mother, Cato, as well as the family pets, "Oscar," "Riley," and "Scout."
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations, in any amount, be sent to your charity of choice to benefit the victims of the recent devastating earthquake in Haiti. As always, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
