Wally Baylis was born in Paddington in 1872.He was a tram employee which was a very prestigious position. He was over 43 years of age when he joined in March 1918. He was really an old man but he must have endured two years in New Guinea. He must have been tough. I dont know much about him but I remember that he joined the Medical Corp in the first world war. Walter was sent to Rabaul and then to northern New Guinea. Imagine having to walk up the Pre Kokoda trail just to get to where he was sent. At 43!
He was married to Annie King in Newtown in 1896.The photo of him that hung in the lounge at home had eyes that would follow you around the room.I saw his ghost several times when I was yound and no one believed me.I am in the process of looking for Annie kings grave. My mother said he was a very stern father and grumpy all the time but I think that he would have been affected by his experience in the First world war.
He died in Uralla and was buried at Armidale.
