OBITUARY-
Michael J. Corcoran, 66; Retired Major Leaguer
A requiem mass will be celebrated at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning in Holy Cross Church for Michael J. (Mickey) Corcoran, 66, of 241 Prospect Ave., a retired major-league baseball player. Prayers at A. J. Martone Funeral Home, 744 Niagara St. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Mickey, one of the best third basemen to emerge from local sand-lots, spent 22 years in professional baseball. He played twice for the Buffalo Bisons, from 1906-09 when he was one of the leagues top batters, and again in 1922.
His first performance with the Bisons won him a spot in the major leagues and he played with Cincinnati in 1909 and Detroit in 1910. His Detroit teammates included such baseball greats as Ty Cobb, Wahoo Sam Crawford and Manager Hughie Jennings. Starting-with the Old Travelers, a semipro nine, Mickey played with many minor league teams, including Bradford, Baltimore, Scranton and Bridgeport. His last year In baseball, 1924. was spent piloting Quebec to a league championship.
Even after he quit baseball, Mickey still retained his love for the sport. He liked to coach sand-lot teams and served as a free-lance scout.
Born in Buffalo in 1884, he attended St. Brigid's School. Surviving are his wife, the former Mae Lovitz; a daughter, Mrs. Michael Muscarella, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Kenefick.
