United States Army General. An artillery officer, he participated in the Pacific Campaign during World War II, and eventually achieved four-star rank. Raised in Boston, he graduated from Boston Latin School, then from West Point; commissioned a second lieutenant of Coast Artillery in June, 1940, he was initially assigned to Ft. Monroe, Virginia. After duty in Hawaii, he received further training in anti-aircraft artillery prior to his February, 1944, posting to New Guinea from whence he was part of the island-hopping that led up to the defeat of Japan. Stationed in Manila at the end of the conflict, Miley undertook a series of assignments both stateside and in Europe, earned his master's degree from Northwestern University in 1949, and in 1956 attended the Army War College. After duty in Germany, and in Washington, DC, he received his fourth star and command of the Army Material Command in 1970; following his 1975 retirement, he lived in Florida, worked for the American Defense Preparedness Association, and traveled widely.
