At first Blake worked in the Fordham University Clinic in the Bronx, where he developed his skills in surgery. Later he went into practice with another dentist. Feeling New York City was not the place to bring up children, he made a trip to his family in Canada. His uncle Harry bought a building in Fredericton, New Brunswick (which was later purchased by his parents) for an office and apartment for his young family. They moved to Canada in 1956, shortly after the death of their second child. He and his wife kept their American citizenship. He retired in 1988 and moved to Fosterville, New Brunswick, after the death of his father in 1989.
