Erlene S. Gallop- VIRGINIA BEACH - On Aug. 18, 2007 Erlene Sawyer Gallop peacefully departed this life in her home on Hermitage Point, Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Gallop was born Dec. 20, 1920, to Norris Baum Sawyer and Selma Harrison Sawyer in Powells Point, N.C. After high school, she entered East Carolina University, then East Carolina Teacher's College (ECTC) where she graduated in 1941 with a major in English.
She was a "born teacher". She loved to teach and touched many lives as she taught for several years in Elizabeth City, N.C, and then later for many years in the Virginia Beach school system from which she retired in 1982. She has positively influenced many through her passion and gift for teaching and some of her fondest memories were recalling students she had taught and keeping up with their life stories and successes.
She was a leaader in her community and loved her church, Bayside Christian. She was active in civic affairs and enjoyed working at the election polls in her Thoroughgood neighborhood. She loved her neighborhood of Thoroughgood and often spoke of her home on Hermitage Point, at which she resided since 1959, as a special and ideal neighborhood of close-knit friends who were also like family. She served as PTA president, served on many boards and committees at Bayside Christian Church, including chairman of the Official board, was a member of the Hermitage Garden Club and shared her husband's love of boating as a member of the Great Bridge Cruising club. She was a great cook, loved her family and loved to entertain. She shared a love for playing bridge as she was a member of numerous bridge clubs through the years.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She will be sorely missed.
She was predeceased by Ernest Wright Gallop, her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 55 years; one brother, Milburn Sawyer; and a sister, Hilda Gallop Evans.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughter, Jane Gallop Newbern and her husband John Melvin Newbern; two grandchildren whom she adored, John Norris Newbern and Krystal Jane Newbern, all of whom reside in Chesapeake; a special sister, Pearl Sawyer Pritchard; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bayside Christian Church, 2224 Greenwell Road, Virginia Beach, by her nephew, retired U.S. Air Force Chaplain Walter Lee Gallop and the Rev. Dr. Jim Christopher. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Bayside Chapel, nd at other times in her home on Hermitage Point in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bayside Christian Church Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
