Curtin was born into a pioneer family in Clark County, Washington where she was raised in that community's transition from farms and horses to automobiles and suburbs. She attended nursing college and became a nurse. For many years, she worked for Kaiser. She met husband Howard D. Bafford and they married January 3, 1948. Doris had a delightful laugh that often came in four ascending notes like a major chord - nothing that can be imitated here or adequately described, but to hear or remember that laugh was to be as close to the essence of Doris as memory serves. At the same time, she was smart, practical, resourceful and dearly loved by all.
