Woodrow "Dee" K. Black died in Corvallis on Feb. 17, 2010. He was 93.
Dee was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Oswalt, Okla., to Agustas E. Black and Mary Gillespie Black. He was raised in Oklahoma until the age of 18, when he moved to California, working as a house painter. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class. After the war, he moved to Oregon, settling in Bellfountain.Dee married LaVinna "Vivian" Bloor on May 22, 1951, in Bellfountain. He worked many years as a timber faller, first for I.P. Lumber Co. and then Hull-Oakes Lumber Co. He retired in the late 1970s, and focused his efforts on the family ranch. He was a two-time recipient of the Livestock Man of the Year. Dee loved to hunt and fish, and help other people. He was a member of the Bellfountain Community Church.He is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Corvallis; son, Kenneth, of Oklahoma; stepdaughters Wanda Joyner of Yuma, Ariz., Myrna Cantrell of Philomath, and Bonnie Moody of Monroe; stepson, Loren Malcom of Salem; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Bellfountain Community Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Bellfountain Cemetery.Memorial contributions can be made to the Bellfountain Community Church in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, OR 97330.
