Corporal James Walter Wilson, born 7 Mar 1888 in Caney Spring, Marshal County, TN., was the son of James L. and Cynthia Jane Wilson, from Marshall County, Tennessee. He left a wife, Berta Anne Wilson, and infant son James Robert.

In the 1900 census 12-year-old James is living with his parents and brothers William 18, and Albert 9, on a farm in District 7 of Lewis County, Tennessee. Lewis county is 73 miles southwest of Nashville.

In the 1910 census 22-year-old James is a boarder and farm hand on the farm of William L. Frailey in Wayne County, TN. Wayne County is 98 miles southwest of Nashville.James married Berta Ann (also a Wilson) 31 Jan 1913 in Maury County, TN. Maury County is 50 miles southwest of Nashville. Son James Robert was born 30 Jul 1917.

James was ordered to report to his local draft board by 4 p.m., on 2 Oct 1917 and was shipped out to mobilization camp at 4 p.m. the next day.

The major operations the 30th Division took part in were the Ypres-Lys, and the Somme offensive, in which it was one of the two American divisions to break the Hindenburg Line in the Battle of St. Quentin Canal. The American 30th Division, with the 27th Division on their left flank was engaged in the Battle of St. Quentin Canal in late September.

Corporal James W Wilson was killed in action 8 Oct 1918. The line at that time was just east of Nauroy between Bellicourt and Cabaret Wood Farm. Bellicourt is 8.5 miles north northwest of Saint Quentin.

The Tennessean (Nashville, Tennessee) – 20 Nov 1918, Wed – Page 10 – JAMES W. WILSON DIES FOR COUNTRY – Corporal James W. Wilson of the 105th Field Signal Battalion was killed in action on October 8. His wife, Mrs. Berta Wilson, who resides in Spring Hill, received the announcement of his death yesterday. Corporal Wilson had been in the service since October 2, 1917. He arrived in France in June of this year, and had been “over the top” more than once. He received his training at Camp Gordon and Camp Sevier. While he was in training at Camp Sevier Mrs. Wilson and little son spent several weeks with him. He was 30 years old and a member of the Methodist Church. Before the war he and his wife made their home at Chapel Hill. He is survived by his wife and little son James Jr.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Wilson; two brothers, W.E. and A. J. Wilson of Hohenwald, and one sister, Mrs. Sidney Frazier, of Nixon. He was known and loved by all of his comrades and has a host of friends who mourn his death.
