Son of Samuel Zessar and Lena Handelman Zessar, brother of Rose Zessar Penn and brother in law of Myer Penn, both of whom were cremated. Some of his first cousins named their children Roy in his memory. Roy's Hebrew name was Yitzchak, after his mother's maternal grandfather Yitzchak Friedman.
Roy was working as a secondary school teacher after he studied for four years at Wayne State University.
Roy died seven weeks and one day after the Allied invasion of Europe, D Day.
