JAMES B. ADAMS, JR.
AGE: 92 SCOTCH PLAINS
James B. Adams, Jr., electrical engineer and volunteer, passed away on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010 just shy of his 93rd birthday.
A native of Baltimore, Md., he was a "scholar exemplar" at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. With an accelerated course of study, he entered Johns Hopkins University as a sophomore, graduating second in his class at the age of 19 with a degree in engineering. Receiving a four year fellowship for graduate study, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Psi, Gamma Alpha, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
His adult life was spent in defense related industries. Bendix Radio, Md., where he headed the Quartz Crystal Laboratory and became Asst. Section Chief of Instrument Engineering; Chief Engineer at Reeves Sound Laboratories, NY; Polytech Device, NJ; Head of Electronic Devices at Kearfott, NJ; and for 24 years at I.T.T. Defense Communications, NJ, managing the installation of microwave and troposcatter communication systems throughout Europe.
His ancestry in this country begins with a land grant from England in the 1600's. His ancestor, Perry Benson fought n the revolutionary war and served as an admiral in the war of 1812. His ancestor, Joshua Johnson became the first Governor of the State of Maryland and whose niece, Louisa Catherine Johnson married future president John Quincy Adams.
