2nd Lieutenant Kenneth Pierce Strawn was an observer (bombardier) in the 96th Aero Squadron during WWI. This Squadron was the first in the United Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The Squadron was based at Amanty Airdrome in France. Strawn was assigned to the Squadron on September 10, 1918, and made several bombing raids in a Breguet 14 bomber. 2nd Lieutenant Strawn and his pilot, 1st Lieutenant Newton Rogers died on September 16, 1918, when after successfully bombing the railway yards at Dommary-Baroncourt, France, their formation was attacked by a large group of enemy aircraft and their airplane went down in flames and crashed.
