Enlisted, May 27, 1917, in Troop A, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, in Brooklyn, NY. The 1st NY Cavalry Regiment reorganized for the World War as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion. Company A was transferred and designated, Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division.

After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe on, May 18, 1918, aboard the USS Calomares, from Newport News, VA. Docking at St. Nazaire, France, May 30, 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Returning to the States, March 5,1919, aboard the USS Leviathan, docking at Hoboken, NJ. He marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, on March 25, 1919. Discharged from the service, April 1, 1919 at Camp Upton, NY.
