ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIEST ATTACHE, DIOCESAN ADMINISTRATOR and longtime MIDWEST PASTOR.
Rt.Rev.Msgr. GEROLD J. KAISER, V.G., was a Roman Catholic priest for 46 years in the Diocese of Jefferson City, the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and the U.S. Military Ordinariate (WWII), now known as the Archdiocese for the U.S. Military Services.

Msgr. Kaiser served as Chancellor and Vicar-General for the Diocese of Jefferson City, as well as the long-time pastor of IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH in Jefferson City where his first funeral Mass was held.

His second (private) funeral Mass was held at the cloistered Carmelite Monastery in Jefferson City, MO. Monsignor Kaiser's FINAL FUNERAL MASS was celebrated at his childhood and First Mass parish in St. Louis, MO, OUR LADY of SORROWS at South Kingshighway and Rhodes Avenues in South St. Louis City, concelebrated by many of his classmates, St. Louis Archbishop John L. May, and Jefferson City Bishop Michael F. McAuliffe.
Both of his public concelebrated Masses featured large crowds--with many of his classmates, priest friends and priest associates from several dioceses in attendance. He was buried next to his Mother and Father (MAX J. and ROSE SPEH KAISER) on his grandparents' FRANCIS X. and FRANCES SPEH's family lot at Old S.S. Peter & Paul Cemetery, at his specific request.

A native of the Old St. Augustine Parish (1873-1974) and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish (founded 1907), Fr. Kaiser was ordained on December 21, 1941 at the New St. Louis Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis by Archbishop (later Cardinal) John J. Glennon,D.D. His first Mass was held Christmas Day, 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in South St. Louis.

Newly ordained Fr. Kaiser then served as an Assistant Pastor at the New Cathedral Basilica on Lindell Blvd.,as well as other parish assignments in suburban St. Louis and elsewhere.

Appointed a Papal Chamberlain (Monsignor) at the age of 35 by Pope Pius XII, Msgr. Kaiser served as Secretary at the Apostolic Delegation in Washington, D.C. under Amleto Cardinal Cicognani (apostolic delegate to the U.S.A.), as well as a U.S. Army captain and military chaplain at Fort Lewis, WASH., prior to assuming subsequent pastoral assignments and responsibilities in the St. Louis and Jefferson City metro areas.

At the creation of the Diocese of Jefferson City in 1957, Msgr. Kaiser was incardinated into that diocese (then serving as Pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Rolla, MO) where he served in several diocesan administrative capacities, including Chancellor and Vicar-General, for nearly 25 years. He also served on the Matrimonial Tribunal at the local and state levels for 35 years.

During Msgr. Kaiser's lengthy priestly career, he built two major churches (St. Patrick's in Rolla, the first University of Missouri-Rolla Newman Center, and Sacred Heart Church in Salem, MO) and pastored more than eight parishes. He also celebrated a bi-monthly Vatican II "Novus Ordo" Latin Mass and a monthly German-language vernacular Mass in the Diocese of Jefferson City until his death, liturgically sharing his attachment to both heritages with the faithful of that diocese.

His classmates, friends and parishioner's called him a "priest's priest." The newly-constructed UMR Catholic Newman Center contains a large meeting room named in his honor, which features his formal photo at age 52.

His old friend and classmate, BISHOP CHARLES R. KOESTER of St. Louis, gave the eulogy at his St. Louis funeral Mass, also at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.

The CATHOLIC MISSOURIAN Diocesan newspaper did several articles on him at the time of his death and several years later by editor Jay Nies. He is missed by many of his fellow clergy, religious, former parishioners and friends who he faithfully served so well!
