MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS - Mr. Lester R. "Pete" Parker, 92, died Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at Genesis Eldercare Mountain View Center in Rutland, Vermont.
Pete was born on June 24, 1918, in Middletown Springs, Vermont, the son of the late Fred and Mattie (Merrill) Parker. He was a graduate of Middletown Springs High School and furthered his education at what is now known as Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont, graduating with a degree in agriculture.
After his graduation from college, he returned to his hometown where he began his lifelong career in dairy farming. He and a few friends saw the necessity for a local fire department, so he became the driving force behind the formation of the Middletown Springs Volunteer Fire Department of which he not only was a longtime member, but also served as fire chief for many years. He was very active in the community, serving several terms as town lister, constable and road commissioner. He was also a Rutland County sheriff.
Pete loved music and formed Les Parker's Orchestra in 1946. For decades, folks danced to his rounds and squares, until he played his last engagement in 2008. He was a member of the Adirondack and the Champlain Valley fiddlers' associations.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hubbardton, a life member of the Chipman Masonic Lodge, F&AM, of Wallingford, Vermont, and a member of the Modern Woodman Association of Wells, Vermont.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Mary (Gaudette) Parker of Middletown Springs; his two daughters, Jacqueline Peck and her husband, Edward, of Springfield, Vermont, and Martha Dunn and her husband, Keith, of Middletown Springs; his grandson, Lester G. Peck and his wife, Lara, of Springfield, Vermont; and several nieces and nephews.
At Pete's request, there will be no visiting hours. Private services will be conducted at the convenience of his family.
For those who wish to send a memorial contribution in memory of "Pete," the family suggests the Middletown Springs Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 1216, Middletown Springs, VT 05757; the First Congregational Church of Hubbardton, 1985 Route 30, Bomoseen, VT 05732; or the Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.
