Alan Monroe Herzel, 48, of East Milton, FL passed away from injuries suffered in a Taliban mortar attack near Khandahar, Afghanistan on Labor Day, September 6, 2010.
As a Master Plumber, Alan was a Civilian Contractor employed by DynCorp International. His job as facilities support plumber supervisor for American military troops entailed constructing and maintaining bath and kitchen necessities for our military personnel.
For the past eighteen months, Alan worked in Iraq prior to being transferred to Afghanistan. At the time of the mortar attack Alan, along with an Electrician and a Computer Specialist civilian contractors, were working to set up a remote forward base camp office. All three were killed by the attack, five others were gravely injured.
After graduating from Pensacola High School (Pensacola, FL) in 1980, Alan served in the United States Air Force Security Police and later became a plumbing professional in the Pensacola area. He formed a love for fishing, boating, camping, RV travel, video bowling and mostly just being around his friends.
Alan and Connie were married in March of 2010. He was a very loving husband, father and friend and will be dearly missed by all who truly knew him.
Alan was a member of The Loyal Order Of The Moose Lodge #557 where he held the office of Prelate; Moose Legion # 182 where he was Secretary/Treasurer; Moose Riders # 557; Eagles Lodge Pensacola and Elks Lodge Navarre.
Alan was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Campbell Herzel; father, Donald L. Herzel; and infant son, Micheal Lee Herzel.
Alan is survived by his wife, Connie Diane Beck Herzel of East Milton, FL; daughter, Emily Drew Herzel of Gautier, MS; sister, Linda D. Herzel of Courts, CA; brother, Donald L. Herzel, Jr. of Pensacola, FL; brother-in-law, James Wood of Shalimar, FL; niece, Lisa Fender of Crestview, FL; uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Herzel of Hendersonville, NC; stepdaughters, Amanda McCalister, Jennifer Hayhurst and Stephanie Hayhurst all of Fredericksburg, VA; stepson, Randy Capps, Jr. of Four Oaks, NC and twelve step-grandchildren.
Visitation will from 5:00-9:00 p.m., Friday, September 17, 2010 at Trahan Family Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Lakeview Baptist Church with burial to follow at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
Trahan Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Loyal Order Of The Moose Lodge # 557, 8851 Lewis Street, Pensacola, FL 32514 after interment.
In lieu of flowers the family asks a donation be made in Alan's honor to the College Trust Fund for Emily Drew Herzel at Regions Bank, Florida or Moose charities.
