Enlisted, November 25, 1914, in Troop A, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG,New York City. On June 30, 1916, he mustered in for federal service, on the Mexican border with Troop A, Squadron A Cavalry. Squadron A was assigned to Camp McAllen as part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division ). He returned to New York, with his Troop A, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.

His cousin Carl Vietor and brother in law George E. Werlemann served in Squadron A.

World War 1, attended the first OTC class at Plattsburg Barracks, NY, and commissioned 1st Lieutenant, Field Artillery, August 15, 1917. He shipped out for France, September 7, 1917, and saw combat with the 6th & 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division. Returning to the States, June 30, 1918, he served at Camp Jackson, SC and Camp McClellan, AL, as a instructor of artillery.
