John was the brother of famed spymaster Elizabeth Van Lew. Before and after the Civil War, he owned and operated the hardware store in Richmond founded by his father.

He assisted Elizabeth in her espionage efforts, even while serving (against his will) in Company "C", 18th Virginia Infantry from February 1864 until his desertion that August. He thereafter fled to Philadelphia for the rest of the War.

He married Mary Carter West, daughter of Thomas J. West of Henrico County, at "Bellfield" on 24 January 1854. They had at least two children, Eliza and Annie Randolph. Their relationship was strained by Mary's pro-Confederate stance, and she spent much time apart from the family. His mother and his sister Elizabeth thereafter took much interest in looking after his daughters, and Eliza remained Elizabeth's lifelong companion.

He next married Augusta on 31 October 1872. They had at least five children: John, Daisy, George, Helen and Burtis "Burt" Danenhower.

His grave near near his wife Mary, parents, daughter Eliza and sister Elizabeth, in the Orrin Williams plot, is unmarked.
