Born to Gustav Adolphus and Mary Cornelia (Schlernitzauer) Becker and was the youngest of four children. His paternal grandfather, Charles A. Becker, was a Civil War veteran, a local politician and entrepreneur, and held the position of Illinois State Treasurer 1889-1891. He married Lucy Kathryn Edwards on June 5, 1943 whom he met when he was stationed at the Birmingham Army Airfield AL during World War II. He and his brother, Charles Becker, were partners in the G.A. Becker and Sons Insurance Agency (founded by their father, Gustave Adolphus Becker)) in Belleville IL until they retired. He served proudly in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a lifelong member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Belleville IL, serving as clerk of the vestry and a member of the choir for many years. He was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the church food pantry, as well as the Todd Hall Retreat Center in Columbia IL. He also volunteered with Khoury League Baseball and the Boy Scouts of America when his sons were young. He loved to tend to his garden in the back yard, play golf, and go camping. He also loved history, especially of Belleville and St, Clair County IL. NOTE: While there is a tombstone that bears his name at Green Mount Protestant Cemetery southeast of Belleville IL, he is not interred there. At his request, he was cremated and his ashes were interred in the Memorial Garden at St George's Episcopal Church, located at the corner of High and D Streets in Belleville IL. Both he and his wife were instrumental in establishing the Memorial Garden for St. George's Episcopal Church members who wished to have their cremains interred there, on the church grounds. As it turned out, he was the first person who was interred at this designated location. He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and eight grandchildren. UPDATE: His wife, Kathryn, died on August 31, 2011 and is interred with him in St. George's Memorial Garden.
