Deceased Name: LONGTIME JEFFERSON TOP DEPUTY BELCHER DIES

Longtime Jefferson County Chief Deputy Sheriff Raymond Belcher died Thursday. He was 73.

The Gardendale resident retired from the sheriff's office in 1983 after 32 years with the department. Belcher was chief deputy his last 20 years with the department and was Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1971.

He was a graduate of Mortimer Jordan High School and the Birmingham School of Law. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1941-45 and was a patrolman with the Fairfield Police Department two years before going to work for the county.

Belcher was a Mason and announced Gardendale High School football games for 17 years. Following his retirement, he performed volunteer work for Carraway Methodist Medical Center and Gardendale Mount Vernon Methodist Church, where he was a member.

Jefferson County sheriff's officials were mourning his loss Thursday. ""His character was impeccable,'' said Capt. Linn Moore, who has been with the department for 22 years. ""He was not only a leader in the department, but in the community. He will be sorely missed.''

Sgt. Marsha Allen of the department's internal affairs division recalled Belcher for having a good sense of humor and a sense of fairness.

""I admired him for his wit and wisdom and his ability to show me the way,'' said Sgt. Emma Moore, who joined the department in 1982 and works in the jail division. ""He was a great man and I'll never forget him for that.''

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Goode Belcher; sons Hank Belcher and Buddy Belcher; stepsons Don Allen and Kenneth Goode; and stepdaughters Barbara Garrison, Nicki Hicks and Nancy Hughes.
