Hester Messer Jones, 88, of Whittier's Nations Creek community, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Skyland Care Center.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 17, in the chapel of Melton Funeral Home with the Revs. Max Cochran and James "Bo" Brown officiating.

Burial was in Nations Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Knight, Rick Knight, Tracy Knight, Robbie Knight, Alvin Jones and Homer Ashe.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was born Sept. 30, 1922, a daughter of the late Edd and Dessie Wykle Messer. She was a homemaker and member of Wilmot Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Jones, who died in 1993; one sister, Beatrice Nations; and one granddaughter.

Surviving are three daughters, Dean Mayes of Fayetteville, Janet Franklin of Hayesville and Tootie Knight of Sevierville, Tenn.; five sons, Buddy Jones, Marshall Jones and Casey Jones, all of Whittier, Ronnie Jones of Sylva and Michael Jones of Norfolk, Va.; three sisters, Faye Nations and Gertie Parris, both of Whittier, and Margie Dills of Dillsboro; two brothers, E.J. Messer of Whittier and Don Messer of Pennsylvania; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
