2nd child and oldest son of Hans Tollefson and Marte Paulsdatter Smeby. He grew up on the family farm (Greater Bjornstad Farm) which was located on the main road between Gjovik and Kapp, on the western side of Lake Mjosa. He married Marte Maria Tommerhoel on 7 November 1835. There were seven children born to this union who survived to adulthood: Marie (1836-1912), Hans (1839-1897), Kari (1842-1926), Halfdan (1844-1909), Per (1847-1873), Anne (1850-1934), and Martinus (1854-1941). He was a precise person who developed a sense of order and exactness in all the he undertook. He could also, at times, be obstinant and stubborn. However, he cared deeply for his wife and family and had a good disposition. He took over operation of the family farm in 1835, which produced various grains and livestock. He developed a keen interest in the enterprises started as stock or cooperative associations for purchasing agricultural products. Among them was the inception of the Toten Brewery and Holmen Distillery in Gjovik, Norway. He also helped to found the Bjornsgard Dairy. In 1874, he turned over operation of the family farm to his son, Hans Bjornstad, who ran it until his death in 1897.
