Edward W. Travis Sr.

SPRING GROVE - Edward W. Travis Sr., 74, of Spring Grove RD 1, died at 1:53 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Hospital from lung cancer. He was surrounded by his family singing his last request "Amazing Grace", and holding a mirror to see the reflection of the American flag flying outside his window, with his last words "I love you" to his wife. He was the husband of Velma M. (Wagner) Herman Hoff Travis.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Faith Evangelical Congregational Church, Bair Station. Burial will be in St. Paul's Union Cemetery, Stoverstown with full military honors by York County Veterans Honorguard. The Sauter-Irwin Funeral Home, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Travis was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Philadelphia. He was orphaned when a young boy living in Baltimore, Maryland, resided in a Boys home for a few years, later living with a foster family who taught him a love for music and singing. He enjoyed volunteering to play his Marine Harmonica through-out his life for others, was an avid gardener, birdwatcher, fisherman, and won many trophies shooting darts. He was a retired electrical engineer for I.B.E.W. Local 26 in Washington. He was a member of West Manchester Township Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7374. Edward was a U.S. Marine Veteran of World War II, and fought in various expeditions. He was wounded in Iwo Jima in February 1945, and was later given a Purple Heart for his service to his country.

Mr. Travis also is survived by a daughter, Sandra D. Purvis of Severn, Md.; three step-sons, Michael J. Herman and Thomas W. Herman, both of Spring Grove RD 1, and William D. Herman of West York; a step-daughter, Patricia M. (Herman) Harless of Thomasville; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a brother, James A. Travis of Huntington Beach, Calif. Mr. Travis was preceded in death by two sons, Edward W. Travis Jr. of Roanoake, Virginia, and Gary T. Travis of Maryland.

Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Michael A. Nagy.
