George Craig Isbell, Pioneer Aviator Dies.

Mr. Isbell was born in Alta, Iowa on February 3, 1904, and passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 12, 2004 at 6:25 a.m.

He learned to fly in Peoria, Illinois in the early 1920s. He and a partner started an airport in Springfield, Illinois, which became "The Airport" in the capitol of Illinois for many years until the city built a municipal airport in about 1950. Mr. Isbell trained hundreds, if not thousands, of students, including many Navy pilots during World War II. Among the friends he made while in Peoria and while managing the airport in Springfield were Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Erhardt, Wrong Way Corrigan, and many other prominent aviators of that time. Mr. and Mrs. Isbell retired and moved to Phoenix in 1955.

Survivors include two brothers, Charles D. and his wife Karin and James C. and his wife Betty, all of Phoenix, as well a many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine nee Simonsen, his parents, George and Sadie, a sister and brother who died in infancy, two sisters, Louise and Marion, and their husbands.

A funeral service was held at the Paradise Chapel, 3934 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018, on Friday, 1/16/04. Internment will be at Greenwood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St., in Phoenix. Family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers, to Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona.
