Members and staff at ACORN and Project Vote were sadden by the untimely loss of James McCall, who played a leadership role in an historic voter registration drive which helped bring hundreds of thousands of African American, Latino, and low income voters to the polls in 2008. McCall, from of Detroit, Michigan, suffered a stroke around the holiday season and passed away on January 20th. In 2007 James McCall started came to work for ACORN a Political Organizer in Detroit, Michigan where he managed a growing staff that conducted a large scale voter registration program to encourage voter participation among young, low income and minority citizens. In 2008 he moved to Florida to oversee a training program for voter registration organizers. He was then promoted to become ACORN's Southern Florida Field Director. As Election Day, 2008 approached, he organized a voting rights program in Florida to assure that eligible citizens from all walks of life were be able to vote have their votes counted. "He was rather young for all of this, but he was a tremendous force for progressive change," said Stephanie Porta, who worked with McCall as Florida ACORN Head Organizer. "He really touched everyone he knew." Bertha Lewis, ACORN's CEO and Chief Organizer said: "The life of James McCall reminds us all of the work that has to be done for poor people in this country; right now we need warriors for justice like him more than ever."
