WOMAN LED VOLUNTEERS

She Served County, Customers

Margaret D. Baumgardner of Johnstown, one of the first women from the Cambria County area to serve in World War II, died Sunday at home. She was 78. During World War II, Mrs. Baumgardner thought her father, a veteran of two wars, would have wanted his oldest son to serve his country, so as the oldest of five daughters, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, said her son, Dean Baumgardner of Bethel Park, Allegheny County. Mrs. Baumgardner served as a secretary at Camp Pendleton, Calif., from July 1943 to July 1945. She met her husband, Fred H. Baumgardner Jr., who was a Marine Sergeant, before the two enlisted. "They got married after he was shipped overseas and wounded," her son said. "They were married while on active duty," he added.

In civilian life, the couple operated Baumgardner's Home Style Bakery from their home from 1960 to 1975. The business got its start because Mrs. Baumgardner's bread was so good that there was none left when Mr. Baumgardner got home. "She made bread, cakes, cookies and wedding cakes," her son said. "It was a full-line bakery." After Mr. Baumgardner died in 1980, Mrs. Baumgardner managed Little Shop at Memorial Hospital, purchasing supplies and overseeing the operation of the gift shop and restaurant. "She made decisions on what to sell in the shop and what foods to make," her son said. After working full time, Mrs. Baumgardner retired in 1998 as co-manager.

Over the years, Mrs. Baumgardner served as president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer of Conemaugh Hospital Ladies Junior Auxiliary. The auxiliary's records indicate that Mrs. Baumgardner gave more volunteer hours than anyone who ever participated. "They stopped counting at 10,000 hours," her son said. "She was well-liked among the members." Mrs. Baumgardner was an avid golfer who enjoyed hitting the fairways at Windber Country Club and Berkley Hills Golf Course. "She was on the women's team at Berkley when her health was good," her son said. Mrs. Baumgardner also enjoyed being a spectator at any event her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in- theater, sports, chorus and band. "She found the time to be a part of our lives," her son said. Mrs. Baumgardner enjoyed live theater and traveled to see shows in Pittsburgh, New York and Washington.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Baumgardner is survived by a daughter, Jane L. Pajski of Robesonia, Berks County; three other sons, Bill Baumgardner of Las Vegas; and John M. Baumgardner and D. J. Baumgardner, both of Johnstown; four sisters, Myra Liegel and Marion Garrity, both of Johnstown; Jean Thomas of Florida; and Lois Biss of Latrobe; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., is in charge of arrangements.
