Austin John DeFerrari, age 89, a mathematician for the Navy Department, who retired in 1983, died at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, of complications from a blood infection.
Mr. DeFerrari served on active duty in the Navy during WW II as a specialist in mine technology. He joined the Navy as a civilian after the war and created models to assess the potential outcomes of naval conflict. As part of his duties, he analyzed data for the Navy during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. Mr. DeFerrari was a native Washingtonian and a 1939 graduate of St. Anthony's High School in the District. He received a bachelor's degree from Catholic University in 1943 and a master's degree in physics from Brown University in 1948. He was a longtime District resident and most recently lived in Chevy Chase.
A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann's Church, Wisconsin Ave. at Yuma St., NW, to be held at 12 noon, Jan. 18. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
