Son of James Marion Brown and Margaret Ellajane Deason (daughter of John Columbus and Louisa Catherine (Brown) Deason) but was raised by his paternal grandparents. He married Nancy Jane Tommie on 15 May 1905 in Bibb County AL. He became involved with Sacred Harp singing and was a one-time president of the B. F. White Sacred Harp Convention of Alabama. He was a very emotional singer and was known as the most zealous of all Sacred Harp singers, as attributed to him by George Pullen Jackson. He and Sidney "Whitt" Denson teamed up with several other Sacred Harp singers and in October 1928 they recorded several songs on the Columbia record label in Atlanta GA. An active singing teacher, he also sang the tenor part in the Denson Quartet with the Denson brothers Bob, "Whitt", and Evan. He died of tuberculosis.
