Our community has been called upon to mourn the death of another of its respected citizens and a valiant soldier of the Civil War, in the person of William H. Loomis, of Arabela, who passed to the great beyond on new year’s day [sic], Jan. 1, 1921, as the result of a stroke of apoplexy.
He was a fine, kindly, genial old gentleman, with a word of hope and encouragement for everyone, and in spite of very painful physical infirmities always manifested a patience and spirit of cheerfulness that was admirable. He will, therefore, be sadly missed and mourned, not only by the member of his immediate family, but by all who knew him.
William H. Loomis, youngest son of Newman and Valoncia Loomis was born at Springwater, N.Y., March 4, 1841. He came to Michigan when a young man and spent the rest of his life here. In 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Davis, of which union eleven children were born. He was also, as we have said, a veteran of the Civil War, being a gallant defender of his country from the beginning of the war until its end. Mr. Loomis was a devoted Bible reader, a Christian gentleman and the friend of every good work.
The surviving members of his family are the widow, three sons and four daughters. The children are as follows: William, John and Roy, of Arabela, Mrs. Cora Taylor and Mrs. J [paper torn] Rosevear, of Flint, Mrs. Palmer [paper torn] and Mrs. Rolland Curtis, of [paper torn]. Funeral services were held from the home on Tuesday, Rev. A. T. Camburn officiating, and the remains were [paper torn] at rest in Pine Grove cemetery.
