Joseph was born in Detroit but lived most of his life in Livonia, Michigan.
Upon arriving in Vietnam Joseph was assigned to Communication Company, 7th Communication Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He died as a result of a gunshot wound during an engagement against hostile forces in the vicinity of Vinh Huy, Nui Loc Son Basin and 8 kilometers east southeast of Que Son.
Survived by his wife, Sheila D Axford of Garden City, Michigan and his parents, Walter E and Virginia M Axford of Livonia, Michigan.
