The Rev. Robert M. Feist, 80, of Goshen, N.Y., a native Staten Islander, retired Lutheran minister and former draftsman, died Monday at home.
Born in New Dorp, he was a graduate of New Dorp High School. In the 1940s and 1950s, he worked as a draftsman for S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Co. at its former Prince's Bay plant.
Rev. Feist earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Wagner College in 1957. He received his master's degree in divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Mount Airy in Philadelphia. While studying there, he worked as a house parent at Carson Valley School in Flourtown, Pa., caring for orphaned children and running athletic programs for them.
Ordained in 1960, Rev. Feist's first assignment was as pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Middletown, N.Y., from 1960 to 1963. He served as pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, North Wales, Pa., from 1964 to 1965, and as associate pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in the Olney section of Philadelphia from 1965 to 1966. He then served as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Greenwood Lake, N.Y., from 1966 to 1972, and as pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Liberty, N.Y., from 1973 until his retirement in 1981. While at St. Paul's Church, he also served as chaplain of the Liberty Fire Department and as pastor of First Lutheran Church in Jeffersonville, N.Y., from 1974 to 1979. After retirement, he served as associate pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, N.Y., from 1989 to 1992.
An avid reader, Rev. Feist enjoyed theological literature.
He served in the Army Reserve.
The Rev. Feist was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Stapleton, where he married his wife, the former Eileen Miller, on July 4, 1953. In addition to his wife, surviving is his daughter, Barbara Stienstra.
The funeral service will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church, Middletown. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Castleton Corners. Arrangements are being handled by the Lippincott Funeral Chapel, Goshen.
