Homer Marshall Barrett was the first commander of the VFW Cole-Miers Post 3619 in DeRidder. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Barrett served in the U.S. Navy during World War I, having enlisted on June 30, 1917 in New Orleans. He was discharged as Fireman 1st Class on Sept. 16, 1919.

Barrett was a Rapides Parish native and after finishing school, he began working in the printing and publishing business. In September 1919, following his service in the Navy, he returned and resumed his work as business manager and editor of the DeRidder Enterprise.

He assisted in organizing the first VFW Cole-Miers Post 3619 and served as commander from July 1, 1936 to June 30, 1937. He also served as American Legion Post Commander for two years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 271, the Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World, and served on the Parish School Board.

Mr. Barrett married Mrs. Ethel B. Steidley in December 1924 and they published the paper until his death in February 1938.
