Sarah Elizabeth Crye Chapman, called "Lizzie", was born March 1, 1884, to Hugh H. Crye, and his wife, the former Susan Crisp. Lizzie was probably named for her paternal and maternal grandmothers, Elizabeth Tuck Crye (wife of David), and Sarah Tuck Crisp (wife of Rice). Lizzie was the Crye family's 3rd daughter, and their sixth child in their brood of seven. She lost her mother when she was only 6 years of age. In 1903, she married Clay Chapman, who had lost his own mother as a teen, after his father passed away in his sleep, in the months prior to Clay's birth. Tragedy continued to follow Lizzie and Clay into their marriage, with the death of their firstborn, James, in 1904; he was only 5 days old. In 1907, however, they were blessed with healthy son Hugh, though they again lost yet another boy, John, one day after his 1911 birth. He was, thankfully, the last baby they would lose; his loss would not, unfortunately, be the family's last tragedy. Between 1913 and 1923, Lizzie gave birth to Reed, Lavenia, Anna Mae, and Clayton. Then, in 1925, the Chapman's world was rocked by dual traumas, changing forever the destiny of the young family. First, Lizzie was diagnosed with cancer. Then, her husband, Clay, 42, was suddenly taken from them all, murdered by an unbalanced co-worker. The grief-stricken & distraught Lizzie, who'd been given a short time to live by doctors, shortly before being widowed, did the only thing she knew to do, given her dire circumstances---she cried out to her Saviour. Several other strong Methodist women (likely including close family friends, Martha Tarpenning, Mae Smith, & "Granny" Odell), came to her bedside, & with her, prayed that she be allowed to live long enough to see her little ones enter school. God answered her prayer affirmatively. Lizzie succumbed to the cancer, joining her husband, Clay, Sr., within a month of their youngest child, Clayton, Jr., beginning formal schooling. She was only 45 years old.
