Luther Clark Lay was a son of Homer L. and Anna E. (Pratt) Lay. On 30 Jan 1940 he married Florence M. Ramer. As Dr. L. Clark Lay, he was a renowned Professor of Mathematics and published several math texts and articles, sometimes co-authored by his sons. They had two sons Dr. David C. Lay and Dr. Steven R. Lay, both of whom were also well known Professors of Mathematics.

His books include: Arithmetic: an introduction to mathematics. [1961], From arithmetic to algebra. [1970], The study of arithmetic. [1966], Principles of algebra, 1990 (with Steven R. Lay).
